Earlier this year, the Shire of Capel (the Shire) upgraded 7 kilometres of the western end of Gavins Road as part of our 25/26 Capital Works Program with a view to community safety.
Recent structural assessments conducted by Main Roads Western Australia (MRWA) identified a requirement for works by Water Corporation on two of their bridges situated on Gavins Road (MRWA Ref: 3491 and MRWA Ref: 3492).
These works will be carried out consecutively, starting with bridge MRWA 3491 situated between Cain Road and Elgin Road on Monday 25 May 2026. Works on this bridge are expected to be completed early June 2026.
Works will then commence on bridge MRWA Ref: 3492 situated between Cain Road and Boundary Road, shortly thereafter. We have no projected completion timeframe for these works but are working closely with Water Corporation and will provide information as it becomes available.
The Shire wishes to also further advise residents that towards the end of this year, we plan to complete maintenance works on the eastern end of Gavins Road as part of our 26/27 Capital Works Program. We will also further advise a projected timeframe for these works shortly.
During the abovementioned works by both Water Corporation and the Shire, traffic management and detours will be put in place. There will also be an increase in truck activity, as well as noise and dust. Please allow for additional travel time during these periods and adhere to all signage.
We understand there are inconveniences associated with these disruptions and thank you for your continued patience. All of the works are with a view to ensuring community safety and to prevent bridges from being low graded.
We want to assure community that we will continue to communicate as proactively as possible and invite residents with questions to drop them below in the Forum, follow this project by creating an account, emailing us via info@capel.wa.gov.au or calling (08) 9727 0222 Monday to Friday 8am to 4:30pm.
A copy of both letters to residents, from Water Corporation and the Shire, communicating these works have been uploaded under Documents to the right of this page.
