We are hosting a Community Collaboration Drop-in Session to discuss two separate projects relating to the Dalyellup Foreshore and coastal area.

Our coast is part of everyday life in Dalyellup - a place to walk, swim, gather, relax and connect. Like much of Western Australia, the Shire of Capel coastline is impacted by erosion (a loss of beach sand, dunes and vegetation), and areas may also be impacted by inundation (flood from sea water).

To plan for these changes responsibly, the Shire of Capel is bringing together one coordinated effort, comprised of two inter-related projects, with two key outcomes, guided by long‑term coastal science and shaped by the community. The long‑term coastal risks have been studied through the Coastal Hazard Risk Management and Adaptation Plan (CHRMAP). The CHRMAP helps us understand what may happen to the coastline over time and makes some recommendations

Now, we are taking the next step, and we would like to hear from you, to help shape what comes next.

Whether you visit often or from time-to-time, your perspective matters.

The CHRMAP addresses the next 100-years, while these two projects focus on the shorter term and respond to the needs of our community and the foreshore today. That’s where you come in.

How these projects fit together

Two projects. One shared direction. Although the projects have different purposes, they work together:

• The Foreshore Management Plan guides how the coastal area including beach and foreshore is managed and cared for over the next 10-15 years.
• The South Dalyellup Redevelopment Project focuses on place-based design and accessibility for the area directly around the Surf Life Saving Club. This project explores how the area around the Surf Life Saving Club could be redesigned to improve safety, accessibility and amenity.
  
  

What we are asking

The Shire of Capel is inviting community, to help shape these two projects for the Dalyellup coastal area, which are happening right now. We are asking that you engage with us on this project by dropping in to a collaborative session or by using the tools on this page.

This is an opportunity to share:

• What you enjoy most about the Dalyellup foreshore
• How you use the area
• What you would like to see into the future
• Any concerns or questions you may have

Your input will help guide how this important area is managed and how it can adapt over time. This area is important to many different communities, so we need input and collaboration from everyone to develop strategies and solutions which are suitable and sustainable.

Project Background

The Shire of Capel has engaged Water Technology to prepare a Foreshore Management Plan (FMP) for Dalyellup Beach in an effort to understand the challenges, hazards and potential issues affecting the area. The FMP will outline management options for the those elements previously identified in the Coastal Hazard Risk Management and Adaptation Plan (CHRMAP) prepared for the area.

The CHRMAP was a collaborative project between the Peron Naturaliste Partnership (PNP) and selected member local governments including the City of Bunbury and Shires of Capel, Dardanup and Harvey, in partnership with the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions and Southern Ports Authority to understand how coastal changes, from the Capel to Leschenault coastline, can be best managed into the future.

Management Options

There are four main adaptation (adjustments that can be made) options for managing coastal risk.

• Avoid – not allowing new development in areas identified to be affected by coastal hazards
• Planned or managed retreat – relocating or removing things which may be at intolerable risk of damage from coastal hazards.
• Accommodate – design measures and/or management strategies that make the risks from coastal hazards more acceptable.
• Protect – works that will preserve the foreshore reserve, public access, public safety and significant property and infrastructure.

Different options are appropriate for different locations taking into consideration the type of coastline, community values, environmental impacts and cost implications. The Shire of Capel is commencing the Foreshore Management Plan process and is keen to engage and collaborate with community and all stakeholders on the different options applicable to the Dalyellup coastal area.

Combined Community Collaboration Drop-in Session | Dalyellup

We invite community to attend an informal Combined Community Collaboration Drop-in Session to chat to consultants, Shire staff and each other about how we can explore the various solutions to keep the area safe, responsibly accessible, environmentally and ecologically protected and to address issues associated with climate in an information exchange.
