Project Background

The Shire of Capel has engaged Water Technology to prepare a Foreshore Management Plan (FMP) for Peppermint Grove Beach in an effort to understand the challenges, hazards and potential issues affecting the area. The FMP will outline management options for the those elements previously identified in the Coastal Hazard Risk Management and Adaptation Plan (CHRMAP) prepared for the area.

The CHRMAP was a collaborative project between the Peron Naturaliste Partnership (PNP) and selected member local governments including the City of Bunbury and Shires of Capel, Dardanup and Harvey, in partnership with the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions and Southern Ports Authority to understand how coastal changes, from the Capel to Leschenault coastline, can be best managed into the future.

Management Options

There are four main adaptation (adjustments that can be made) options for managing coastal risk.

• Avoid – not allowing new development in areas identified to be affected by coastal hazards
• Planned or managed retreat – relocating or removing things which may be at intolerable risk of damage from coastal hazards.
• Accommodate – design measures and/or management strategies that make the risks from coastal hazards more acceptable.
• Protect – works that will preserve the foreshore reserve, public access, public safety and significant property and infrastructure.

Different options are appropriate for different locations taking into consideration the type of coastline, community values, environmental impacts and cost implications. The Shire of Capel is commencing the Foreshore Management Plan process and is keen to engage and collaborate with community and all stakeholders on the different options applicable to the Peppermint Grove Beach area.

We invite community to attend an informal Community Collaboration Drop-in Session to chat to Water Technology consultants, Shire staff and each other about how we can explore the various solutions to keep the area safe, responsibly accessible, environmentally and ecologically protected and to address issues associated with climate in an information exchange.
